Australian Couple Welcomes Identical Triplets!

An Australian couple has shattered the medical odds after giving birth to naturally conceived identical triplets – a combination thought to occur only once every 160,000 births.

To the delight of Lisa and Kieran Billing, Xavier, Cooper and Noah Billing arrived at 32 weeks gestation 11.42am yesterday, weighing 3.74lbs, 3.43lbs and 3.3lbs respectively.

“They’re so delicate,” said Mr Billing between visits to the boys’ humidicribs yesterday.

“You can hold them in the palms of your hands they’re that small,” Mr Billing said.

While naturally conceived triplets are rare, identical triplets are far less common. A variety of estimates, place the odds anywhere from 1:150,000-160,000 up to 1:200 million.

In this case, it took three visits to two different obstetricians for the Billings to learn the full extent of the pregnancy.

Their first doctor indicated a single birth, then at their next appointment told them to expect twins.

Mr Billing, 29, learnt there was a third baby after returning home from work to a sobbing wife fresh from her third visit.

“Thank God they stopped there,” he said.

In preparation for the babies homecoming, the couple has bought a bigger car and extended their house.

Two-Year-Old Recieves Sunbed Treatments For Rare Skin Condition

A two-year-old British girl has become the country’s youngest recipient of UVA treatment, using a sunbed.

The day Stephanie Brown was born her skin erupted with painful blisters. At first, doctors believed her skin was reacting to her new environment but, as time went on, it became apparent that the little girl was suffering from a serious skin condition.

For months, Stephanie’s parents went without answers while they saw their daughter suffer, constantly, with painful blisters from her head to her feet. The blisters weren’t just uncomfortable; they were disfiguring and drew attention.

“People would have such extreme reactions to Stephanie,” said Maria Brown, Stephanie’s mother. “Grown adults would stop and stare – it was unbelievably rude and very hurtful.”

“We once cleared a whole shop just by walking in. People immediately jumped to conclusions and thought she was contagious.”

“Once staff refused to carry her onto an aeroplane and I was gobsmacked, she was treated appallingly.”

At four months, Stephanie was diagnosed with mastocytisis and at six months, she was finally, specifically diagnosed with diffuse cutaneous mastocytosis, a very rare condition that occurs in only 1 in 500,000 people. The condition, generally, affects children and tends to improve over time and resolve itself by puberty.

Now two-years-old, Stephanie is the youngest patient in Britain to be treated with UVA through the use of a sunbed.

“After the first 20 sessions I was concerned that [the treatment] wasn’t working, but it was remarkable how much difference it made from that point on,” Stephanie’s mother said.

“Although using something like a sunbed to treat a baby might seem strange it’s perfectly safe and has really helped Stephanie.”

While Stephanie is not cured, her skin has benefited immensely from the treatment. She may need more UVA treatment in her teens but it is hoped that the condition will be, largely, resolved by then. – Jen R, Staff Writer.

Celebrating Baby Number Two!

More and more second time moms are having baby showers to celebrate the newest addition to the family, but often times, they don’t know if they should register or what they should register for. It’s all in what you feel comfortable doing, and if there are items you need to make the transition from one to two children easier, I say go for it…register away!

But…since many of your guests may have given you a gift when you were pregnant with your first child, focus on the essentials when registering for your second baby. Some items to consider registering for are:

- Diapers
- Wipes
- Gift Cards
- Daddy Diaper bag
- Burp cloths
- Bibs
- Double Stroller (Perhaps family members will pool together to get you this big item.)

Consider registering for a few outfits, too. If your second baby is a different gender than your first child, gender specific clothes are always very fun, and very necessary! Even if the gender is the same, new clothes are always a great gift idea since baby clothes become worn out so easily.

If you still feel uncomfortable about having a good ol’ fashion baby shower thrown for you for your second child, there are other ways to celebrate your pregnancy. You could suggest to your gracious hosts to hold a specific themed shower, such as a book shower (guests bring children’s books to build your baby’s library), a diaper shower, or a frozen meal shower. All of these shower ideas would mean less expensive gifts that your guests would have to give, but all are very useful. Or you could simply have a “Baby Bash” where your friends and family come to a party in your honor, but no gifts are given.

Expanding your family is an exciting time…enjoy celebrating your new baby!
